WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Whenualcura and Waitotara. . BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday, A public meeting was held in the Town Hall on Saturday evening last, to take into consideration the advisableness of altering the proposed railway siding from Whenuakura to the Racecourse, Waverley. The meeting was largely attended, and considerable interest seemed to be taken in the proceedings.
Mr F. P. Fookes was voted to the chair, and the notice convening the meeting having been read, the meeting was addressed by several of the promoters, who pointed out why it would be desirable to urge on the Government to’ alter the site of the proposed siding to the crossing near the Racecourse, the reasons given being that the latter site would be far more convenient to the settlers generally than the Whenuakura site. Others were, however, of opinion that the Whenuakura site should not be altered.
After considerable discussion, the following resolution was moved by Mr Walter Symes, and seconded by Mr Duncan McLean, “ That in the opinion of this meeting the railway siding be put ou the' Racecourse, where the line Crosses the main road, instead of where fixed at present, as it would be of greater service to the settlers and public generally.”
An amendment was then moved by Mr S. Caldwell and seconded by Mr Wybourne, “ That the present site fixed by Government shall not be altered.” This amendment being put, was lost, and another amendment was then moved by Mr Skelley and seconded by Mr J. McLean, “ That this meeting begs respectfully to bring under the notice of the Minister of Public Works that one siding between Waverley and Patea is not sufficient for the requirements of the district, and would therefore suggest an additional siding, and allow the Government to determine the original terminus through their Engineer,” This amendment being put, was also lost, when the original resolution was put and carried, 22 voting for and 15 against.
A resolution was then moved by Mr W. Wilson and seconded by Mr Wybourrie, “ That the Chairman forward the resolution to the Minister of Public Works ; and also draw his attention to the fact that 22 votes only were recorded in its favor, while 15 votes were recorded against it.” An amendment was however moved on this by Mr W. Symes, and seconded by Mr D. McLean, “ That the resolution as passed be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, with a memorial.” The amendment was carried.
It was then moved by Mr W. Symes, seconded by Mr J. Walker, and carried, “ That a committee of five be appointed to draw np the memorial, consisting of Messrs Walkinton, McLean, G. Newland, Morton, and the mover.” This terminated the proceedings, and the meeting broke up.
