Manutahi School.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Education Board, held in Wanganui, a deputation comprising Messrs Morgan, Mcand| Christie, .waited upon the Board with regard to tlie appointment of a male certificated teacher to the school at Manutahi. The commissioners of the previous year, had applied to the Board for. a certificated teacher, and- the committee which had since been elected rather felt inclined to censure the cpmmissiohers for their action. Mr Morgan presented ,a petition from the parents of twenty-five children, asking for the appointment of the teacher, and stated that the committee had refused to forward the petition to the Board. The committee decided to call a meeting of householders to ascertain the feeling, but, though the meeting was called, nothing was :dbue./ Miss Hay, it was stated, had been appointed to this school on the undehtandiiig that' she |hould qualify for a certificate. Some discussion took place as to the meaning of the report of last year on this school, when it was elicited that, although the “ passes ” amounted to cent, per cent.,’yet the condition of the school was very backward indeed. Mr McGregor stated that several members of the present committee thought tfie mistress of the school equal to the requirements, of the district, whereas' the .'petitioners a certificated teacher was very much wanted, Mr Notman said the" point was whether the Board could go behind the committee in order to, grant the prayer of the petitioners. ; Mr Baker sympathised greatly with the position in which the deputation and those they, represented were placed, bdt thought the Board were unable to act in opposition to the committee.
Mr Ross held that the . Board had fall power to appoint a certificated teacher to any of the schools in the district which were now under lincertidcated teachers.
Mr. Baker pointed out that several children: in this... school had passed Standard HR Was Miss Hay able to prepare a child to pass Standard IV. ? The Inspector said he thought not. He had asked Miss Hay to come up for examination, and she ■, had positively refused to do so. ■ •
The Chairman informed the deputation that/ the Board could only deal with the matter when brought before them through the school committee. , ... Mr Bridge moved, Mr Nbtraan seconded, and it was resolved, That the attention of the Manutahi School Committee be drawn to the fact that an application from the late commissioners is held over pending the decision of the new committee, and that they be requested to .forward . their decision upon the point. ,
