I (?BR UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) I This Day. I Property Tax Collector. 1 Wellington, 29th.—The total amount If Property Tax nnpaid for the year is Bss than £IO,OOO. The exact figures nil not be ascertained until advices up Id Ist instant come to hand from postmasters; Money received in respect 'of the 10 per cent, added to the tax in consequence of neglect to pay punctually amounts to £6OO. Legal proceedings are about to be taken against those who have refused to pay the tax or addition of ten per cent. The outstanding tax is about 41s 4d per cent, of the total tax for the year.
Fatal Accident. Auckland, 29th.—Captain Duncan Matheson, of the schooner Matheson, was terribly injured by a spar in the slings which fell upon him yesterday. He died in the Hospital this morning. Fever at Napieri Napier.—Owing to the Hospital being full, a portion of the Barracks has been ;onverted into a fever ward. Protesting Against Sunday' Shipping. ■ Napier.—ln reply to a Ke Bishop ;of/-Na]sier has/cdnsented to.'* lend a strong representation to the of the Union S.S. Company in reference to making Napier a port of call on Sundays.
Sudden Death* Nelson, this day.—A man named John Dermott was found dead in a bedroom at the Custom House Hotel this morning. Deceased went/to;bed in ibis usual spirits. Dr Rogers states that death was cansed-from asthma and heart disease combined. The deceased was well known on the West Coast, where he took great interest in mining matters. He was a brother of the late Dr Dermott.
SHIPPING DISASTER at KAIPABA Wellington.—Yesterday morning the following vessels endeavored to leave Kaipara harbor: Vindex, barque ; Transport, brig ; Sarah Pile, brigantine ; Zior and Energy, schooners. On reaching the channel they found the Wind too light, and anchored ; the four first, named vessels being off north spit *head, and the Energy inside the Tory shoal. All vessels were rolling gunwales under. Later information states that the Yindex went ashore yesterday afternoon., on.The., north-spit head, no. lives being lost. The captain has his wife aboard. 5 The vessel will be a total wreck- Tho other vessels are all right at present.
