The Governor has:-remitted, .on> the recommendation ' of Ministers, the reinainder of , the sentence pf imprisonment for ; life passed in 1872 upon Te Maka Ritai, one of Te' Kooti’e foil lowera, for the murder of,fa. friendly, nativemessenger,, on ’the: occasion of the Poverty Bay campaign. Te Maka Bitai received sentence pf death, which "was commuted to per-petuaL_imprisonment-on-it.-being- clearly Shown that prisoner acted under Te Kooti’s orders* ahdiiiii fear;- ,ofc ; death .at the hand of the latter if he disobeyed. It was also .determined that, if. prisoner’s conduct jin prison was goddj he would be released as soon as he completed a term of ten years. This 1 period has expired, and his conduct • having been uniformly good, Ministers recommended the Governor' to ;remit)the ‘ rest of the sentence, and his Excellency did so .accordingly. —■■■•
