The following items of interest are taken from report in Wanganui journals.
APPOINTMENTS. The appointment committee recommended Mrs Honniman as permanent assistant mistress at Waverley v , and that Miss Ellis’s name be retained on the board’s books. Application from Miss Holland for appointment as pupilteacher at Hawera was held over. The recommendations were adopted.
WAYERLEY. The tender of Thomas Barnott, Wanganui, for additions &c. to the WaverSchool, was accepted, the.amount being £59 IOSi /■ , s; ! U? 1
Letter stating that the committee did not object to the papering of two rooms in teacher’s residence standing over for the present. Also calling /attention to an apparent oversight in the Education Act, whereby a member of committee conld retain membership throughout a whole twelvemonth, and never once attend a meeting. Resolved that; the attention o| the i Governor in •• "3 : r : : 2 Council bewailed to'tne apparent omission of any provision as to disqualification of members of committee for nonattendance at. meetings. . - T -
Pupil Teachers for Patea. ; The inspector reported tHa|i *Kef Kact ein'minefUtheT candidates Vt the Patea School, and recommended the appointment of Martha Ussher as pupilteacher, as being the most advanced, and of May Black as first cadet, and of Mina Hawken as second cadet. The attendance sometimes reached 225. Mr Williamson had 45 children, the second master had 70, and the infant roonilhpd ffOi; X‘i V”/"
Mr Notman thought one more cadet ..would rbe antple| as the teaching staff iwas now equal t0'275, Svhifo the average attendance was 168. Mr Sanson did not think they should be so extremely particular as to limiting the number of cadets. He rather thought they 3h.hu ld encourage the young people in coming forward for the work of teaching. Mr Baker thought it would be a rather , dangerous . ..thing to run the risk of over-officering the' schools, as it Would; :npt- ifnprobably- A ksserQ [instead] of increasing the teaching'efficiency. NORMANBY. Letter from Mr Quin, chairman of the school |cpminittee, asking the Board to grant a sum of £2O towards the lining of the Normanby School, and the committee would be prepared to supplement the amount by whatever else was required.—Acceded to. KAKARAMEA. Letter from Mr Payne, chairman of committee, asking for a sum of £2 for the papering of teacher’s residence.— Granted.
