Napier Races Handsome Donation Napier, 2Brd.—At the settling for the Jockey Club’s late meeting £1,393 was paid to the various winners. Allan McLean, the owner of Louie, winner of the Maiden Plate and Napier Handicap, received £465, and immediately gave a cheque for £IO,O to the hospital.
Passing Valueless Cheques. Napier 23rd.—Mr W. H. Clayton, son of the late Colonial Architect, and brother-in-law to Sir Julius Vogei, was arrested to night on a charge of passing valucles cheques. He has been working on Mr William’s Edenham station. Canterbury Market. Christchurchj 23rd.—-The. business of the week in the grain market has been fully up to the average. The market at the beginning was a shade quiet, but later on prices have hardened considerably. Wheat—Rates at the commencement of the week were not so firm, but towards the end advanced. Spring samples now stand at 4s 4s to 4s sd, while Tuscan commands 4s 6d. Oats are in no way changed. Values,, are quoted at 3s 3d to 3s 6d for milling, and 2s lld for feed. Barley—For prime lots 4s 3d to 4s Gd have been paid; feed sorts have advanced in consequence of the increase of. the price of,oats.
Flour is; quoted by rail lets at £lO 10s, for best brands.
Rye Grass—The demand has lulled, and prices are easier. Cocksfoot is now . quoted al 1 1 ■ j Retail prices—Fresh butter, Is per lb; cheese, fid to IQd per lb, beef, 2d 'to fid per lb-:' mutton, 2d to 4d per lb ; lamb, 2s fid to 3s per quarter; pork, fid per lb ; ham, Is per lb ; bacon 9d per lb.
Relief for Bistressed Miners. Sydney, 23rd. —A train of camels, with provisions for the relief of the distressed miners, is now on its way to Mount Brown goldfield.
Canterbury Earn Fair.
Christchurch, 23rd.—The annual Ram and Ewe Fair;of the AgricutUral /arid Pastoral Association was opened at the show grounds this morning. The entries are—l,soo rams, and 100 ewes. The attendance was not as large as usual. During; the whole day there were not 500 persons on the ground. Some of the lots offered were passed in, as the competition was far from brisk. The following were the highest prices obtained for r&ras : Messrs,R.’ Wilhie & Co., on account of the Hon. M. Holmes, 25, 16, 11, and 9 guineas ; by Messrs Matson, on account of Mr J. G. Russell, 15 guineas.
Gold Bush. Hokitika, 23rd.—There are now close on two hundred men on, the Woodstock rash. To-day Roberts and party, next to the prospectors* washed 15dwts from one load. Blundell and party will bottom to-morrow. , Their prospects are good. O’Loghlin and party are also on gold. A large number of holes are being sunk, and there is every indication of a fairly extensive and payable field being opened. Important Rating Decision. Napier, 23rd.—The valuation in some road districts being notoriously too low, the County Council decided to object. Judge Kenny yesterday ruled that the council bad no locus standi. There will be an appeal. House Burnt. Napier.—A seven-roomed house at Taradale was destroyed by fire at midnight. It was'occupied by a widow and five children who with difficulty escaped. The house was insured for £IOO, furniture £6O, in the New Zealand Co. Twenty pounds in notes were burnt, nothing was saved.
Earthquake. Napier,—A slight earthquake, took place’at 11.22 this morning.
New Track for Cable. \Ve]iington 7 £?3r<.?. When the tHsabled cable across Gook Straits is repaired, it is expected that a deviation from the present coarse will be adopted. At present appearances are in favour of a deviation to the southward and "eastward, so as to avoid a troublesome furrow across the Strait.
