STABBING a WIFE
Wanganui.— A serious case of stabbing occurred at Aramoho early this morning. A man named Reuben Bason was walking with his wife and abusing her. Either by accident or design, a knife he was flourishing in Lis hand struck her in the abdomen, inflicting a wound 2|- inches long, from which the intestines protruded. Medical aid was obtained, and the intestines (not being cut) were replaced. The woman may recover. Bason has been apprehended. He is a well known character, and has served several terms in gaol for ill-treating his wife.
'Frisco Mails. Wellington.— The steamer City of New York, with February English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 12th instant, one day late. The Zealandia, with February Colonial mails, arrived at ’Frisco from Auckland on the 21st instant, two days before time. Sheep FairChristchnrch.—The ram and ewe fair commenced this morning, the entries being 1500 rams, and 100 ewes. Fleet and the Exhibition. Christchurch.—The Mayor has received a letter from Commodore Erskine, now at Hobart, stating that he will not be able to attend the opening of the Exhibition, as he is ordered to Sydney shortly, but will send H.M.S. Miranda, and hopes to be able to visit Christchurch himself before the Exhibition closes. Coast Railway Contract. Wellington, 22nd.—This afternoon the seal of the colony was affixed by the Governor to the contract with the West Const (North Island) Railway Company. The document had been posted to Christchurch for the Governor’s signature. Running on a Beacon. Wellington. Further examination of the massive beacon in the French Pass, which was struck by the steamer Star of the South, shows that the structure was badly canted over, but will probably be ns serviceable as ever. MEETING 0F PARLIAMENT. Wellington. —It is understood that it was finally decided yesterday that Parliament shall meet on Thursday, the 18th of May, for the despatch of business, and that a proclamation to this effect be forwarded for his Excellency’s signature.
