West Coast Railway Contract.
Wellington.—-At a meeting of the Executive Council to-day, the seal of the colony will be formally affixed to the contract between the Government and the Wellington and Manawatn Railway Company. The deed will then be forwarded to Christchurch to receive his Excellency’s signature.
Stock Show at the Exhibition. Christchurch.—The Agricultural and Pastoral Association will hold a show, during the exhibition time, of fat stock, roots, grain, &c., to show visitors what the district can do. There are between 1400 and 1500 entries of rams, and 1000 of ewes for the annual fair this week. A Home for Poor and Aged. Wellington.—At a meeting of the Benevolent Institution yesterday, the Mayor read a letter from a gentleman who did not wish his name to be disclosed, offering to give £I,OOO towards a Home for the poor and aged. Endeavors will be made to raise another £I,OOO by subscription. The Mayor promised to present £IOO, providing that nine others do the same.
In preparation for opening the Exhibition at Christchurch, articles are now being arranged in the building. Rowdy youths at Christchurch have become so troublesome, that 12 constables and a sergeant have been added to the local force.
The Rev. Mr Green and bis tvro Swiss guides have been on another climbing xpedition. They made an attempt to ascend Mount Earnslaw, at the head of Lake Wakatipu, on Monday, but the weather was extremely bad, and they were unable to get up more than four thousand feet. Mr Green, however, believes that no great difficulty would be encountered in reaching the summit, but the feat is not to be accomplished by amateurs. He admires the lake’s scenery, and has no doubt members of the Alpine Club will visit the lake next year. The election contest for the Wakanui vacancy is peculiar. Mr Ivess is offering again as a Liberal and Opposition candidate. Mr Saunders is also standing as a Liberal who believes in neither party—a political Ishmael. Mr Wason, the Conservative who lost the seat through irregularities in the election, is not offering again, but gives a qualified support to Mr Saunders. The contest lies between two Liberals who are identified with the district, Ashburton being its centre ; and these two Liberals are personally not friends in any sense. Mr Ivess had all but won the seat before, and is better entitled to it than Mr Saunders for local reasons. Mr Saunders was turned out of the Cheviott seat, after long trial: why should he be more acceptable to Wakanui ? He fails by being impracticable. Mr Ivess has yet to be tried in tlie House, but is not new to politics. Mr Saunders is too selfish in trying to grasp the seat, after being rejected elsewhere.
A poultice of fresh tea leaves moistened with water will cure a sty on the eyelid.
“Mr A. is one of those people who rob Peter to pay Paul,” said Mr B. “Hardly, hardly,” responded Mr C. Our friend A. doesn’t do that exactly. He always stops after robbing Peter.”
Josh Billings disposes of Colonel Bob Ingersoll in the following quaint manner : —“ I wouldn’t give five cents to hear Bob Ingersoll on ‘ The Mistakes of Moses,’ but would give five hundred dollars to hear Moses on the Mistakes of Bob Ingersoll.” A sceptical hearer once said to a Baptist minister, “ How do you reconcile the teachings of the Bible with the latest conclusions of science ?” “ I haven’t seen this morning’s papers,” naively replied the minister. “ What are the latest conclusions of modern science ?”
