Hokitika Gold Rush, Hokitika,— Another claim bottomed on gold yesterday afternoon, at the Woodstock rush, with similar prospects to that obtained by the prospectors. Two more claims are expected to be bottomed to-morrow. Twenty to thirty parties are now sinking, and numbers are shepherding on the ground.
SPORTSMAN IN TROUBLE. Napier.—Mr P. H. Mnrtagb, well known in racing circles, was arrested yesterday while going on board the steamer for Auckland, on a charge of larceny as a bailee. Mr Murtagh had given a bill of sale over his race-horses, and had sold some by auction, retaining the money.
Sunday Traffic. Napier.—Strong protests are being made against the traffic caused by Union boats calling here on Sunday.
Crown Land Sale. Auckland. The Crown land sale realised nearly £4OOO. In some cases sections realised 100 to 300 percent, on upset prices. Old Soldiers’ Claims. Auckland. Three hundred claims have been lodged with the secretary of the Royal Commission on Volunteer and military land claims. Treatment in Quarantine. Auckland.—The steerage passengers of the Australia complain of being badly treated as respects provisions at the quarantine station, and have forwarded a memorial to the superintendent of the quarantine station.
