Describing the recent ascent of Mount Egruont from Stratford, Mr Sherer says the party had to cross two rivers and numerous streams ; but if a track were cut through the bush the ascent from that side would be easy. On the extreme eastern peak they planted a good sized pole and made a cairn ef stones round it. The peak is sharp like a huge knife, and the south and west sides are frightfully steep. At a Committee meeting of the Hawera Road Board held on Saturday, tenders were opened and dealt with as follows : —Getting and carting 400 yards gravel, Tongahoe, A . Nathan, 2s 3d per yard (accepted); P. Sangster, 2s 8d; D. Kearins and Co., 2s 9d. Tawhiti Road—J. Connolly (accepted), £47 5s ; Blennerhassett and Kearins, £sl 7s; A. Nathan £69; O’Rielly and Carthy, £69; H. McDevitt, £143. Noonan Road tenders were held oyer till next meeting ; three tenders were sent in.— Star.
