MARKETS.

LONDON SEED TRADE.

Messrs John Shaw & Sons, London, report that the market during the month ending January 26th gradually but surely showed more inclination for business, dealers beginning to realise that the reports as to the shortness of crops were in the main correct. Ahonsiderable business had been transacted in red clover at full rates : supplies of anything fine in Foreign were nearly exhausted. The quality of English offering was very unsatisfactory the very choice samples offering at the beginning of the season not being now forthcoming. White clover in good demand, at late rates, the choice quality offering attracting buyers. Alsyke quiet, but firm. Italian rye-grass still advancing and likely to advance more. Holders of stock were for once having things all their own way, which was rather a novel experience for the seed trade. Timothy in very short supply, and dearer.

CANTERBURY GRAIN & PRODUCE (From Lie Canterbury Times.')

The business of the week ending 17th has not been marked by any special feature. A fair trade can be reported, though prices cannot be said to be quite so firm for wheat.

Wheat. —A steady business has transpired at 4s 3d to 4s 4d for prime samples. Fair quantity has been sold at 4s 2d to 4s 2£d. Superior lines of Tuscan are still sought after, at a shade more than quotations.

Oats. —The transactions have not been frequent, owing to the paucity of lots coming forward. The market is a very firm one, and any samples offering are eagerly taken at current rates. Milling quality commands 2s lOd to 2s lid ; and feed, 2s 8d to 2s 9d. Barley. —There is not much to note passing in this grain. A few weeks mere, however, should elicit business.

Flour remains at £lO to £lO 10s for best brands. Oatmeal has again been advanced 20s per ton.

Grass Seed.—Rye grass is unaltered, though high prices have partially checked the enquiry.
