KILLED NEAR TONGAHOE.
A fatal and shocking accident happened near the brick-yard at Tongahoe stream on Saturday afternoon. A man named Thomas Coyle was driving a team of four bullocks with a load of firewood to the Tongahoe brickyard, and haying had some drink at Hawera, he seems to have been sitting drowsily on the dray-pole to which the bullocks were yoked. Whether he fell off while asleep or through drunkenness is open to doubt, but he was seen lying on the road dead, the dray wheel having passed over him, crushing the forehead and one ear, and probably causing instant death. The team had stopped a few paces past the body. Miss Bartlett, lately of Opanaki, was the first to see the shocking spectacle; and while she was there Mr Baldwin, from Patea, passed the place, which is the flat before descending towards the river. They sought assistance; and information having been sent to Hawera, the body was removed there for a coroner’s inquest. A telegram from Hawera says the inquest is being held to-day.
