THE FRANKLIN ELECTION. The Intimidation Cases.
Auckland, this day. After the Franklin petition yesterday was concluded, the intimidation cases were considered. The charges are to the effect that the District Returning Officer at Howick refused to give Wm. Dowell a voting paper without attaching to it conditions which he was not authorised by law to do ; and that Robt. Hattaway used intimidation to Dowell and prevented him voting. Dowell’s evidence was to the effect that he had been prevented from voting by the threats of Hattaway and others to get his (Dowell’s) master into trouble, by the Returning Officer saying “ You can vote if you like, but I will cast it aside and it will not count.” Other witnesses were examined, and the Bench decided to bear all the cases before allowing arguments in reply to be made by counsel.
