New Banks in Patea.
The new premises for the bank of Australasia in Patea will be large and substantial, indicating confidence in the stability of Patea as a commercial port. The building is to be two storeys., .The elevation to the main street shows four windows and a door on the ground floor; five windows on the upper floor; the interspaces relieved with early Italian pilasters, and capitals; the floor-line marked with a semi-cornice, picked out with filleted bands.. The side elevation, is in the same style and rather longer; five windows and a door on the ground floor, and five upper windows. The building will occupy the corner corre-. spending to the bank of New Zealand ; the elevations being a little broader, but the general style not so massive, and less expensive in structure. The banking room will be spacious, with windows to both streets, the floor 24 feet square. The manager’s room will occupy the remaining space on right hand of the front entrance ; behind it being the strong-room, . with brick walls, slateshelves, and fire-proof. The side entrance gives access to the domestic rooms ; the dihing-ropm on the ground floor being 15 feet by 14 ; the kitchens behind it. On the upper floor, the drawing-room occupies the corner over the banking roonq 24ft by 14, with windows to both streets; the other space being bedrooms, &c. The domestic portion of the premises is on a scale requiring a good ' deah of furniture to produce the desired appearance <of homeliness. Tenders for the building close next Wednesday, and the date for completion is July 2Xst—-four months.
The new premises for the bank of New Zealand are approaching completion, and are expected, to; be ready for opening within a month. The contract time is being over-run, owing to delays in getting timber of the kinds specified. The building will be the premier structure in Patea ; for there is not merely a show of substantialness and long durability, but the reality is there. Messrs Bush and Kendall are making a creditable job, under the supervision of Mr Mahony.
The exterior boards are to be coated with sand, in imitation of a substantial stone structure. The sand is procured from the ocean beach at Dunedin ; and is greyish in color, toning well with stone. The section area is being fenced anew, and the bank will soon present a handsome completeness. Internally, the fittings and decoration are well advanced. The bank room, occupying the corner, is about 28 feet by 23; with windows to both streets. The manager’s room is to the left of the entrance, and behind it the fireproof strong room. The side entrance leads to the dining-room, 23 feet by 14 ; with passage to the kitchens ; and up a good staircase to the drawingroom and bed rooms on the upper floor. The pointing and paperhauging of the upper floor are almost finished by Lawler Brothers, who intend opening a branch business in Patea. The drawingroom, 22 feet by 16, overlooks the side street, with one window towards the sea westward. This room looks cosy, and is fitted with a handsome chimney-piece in white marble ; the other principal rooms haying .dark chimney-pieces in marbled slate, a rich imitation of porphyry and other mottled marbles. The whole building is separated from others by a wide space, as a protection against fire.
The hank of New South Wales has recently added a second storey; and extended the ground floor rooms to give more banking space. The building is redecorated, and now has' an 'air of neat compactness as a bank and as a residence.
