THE WELLINGTON FROZEN MEAT COMPANY.
The reticence which has characterised the directors and officers of this company since its formation has led many to infer that the venture was flagging for want of support, and that it was only a question of time as to when the announcement would be made that it had been decided to abandon it. We are pleased to be at length in a position to contradict these surmises and to state that the Wellington Meat and Export Company is likely soon to initiate active operations. A meeting of the directors was held at Mr Carroll’s office a few days ago, and although the details of the proceedings have not been made public, sufficient has transpired to show us that'the directors are in earnest in carrying out the project which they have undertaken. At this meeting the New Zealand agent of the Haslam machine attended and gave full information as to mode of working, expense, &c., and as the superiority of this machine is now generally admitted, it is extremely likely that one of them will be ordered by the company at an early date. At any rate we are informed it is intended to commence negotiations for the purchase of machinery at once. It was also resolved at the meeting referred to that the secretary should ascertain as soon as possible whether there is any chance of obtaining the use of the ship Mataura, which is expected at Lyttelton shortly, for the first shipment. Our readers will remember that the Mataura was fitted in England with refrigerating chambers and apparatus some months ago with a view to taking advantage of the New Zealand movement in the export of frozen meat. —Agricultural News.
