Waverlei / Riding : C. A. Dario 91 votes, W. Wilson 90, T. W. Fisher 83, J. B. Taylor 76, G. S. Bridge 70. Chairman of Council, F. M. Chapman. Meetings held at Patea first Wednesday in each month.

pATEA Borough Council. Borough incorporated Oct. 13lh, 1881. Council elected November 17th, the next animal election being' due September 2nd, 1882. The annual election of Mayor takes place on the last Wednesday in November, The Council is composed as follows : MAYOR, George Francis Sherwood, J.P. COUNCILLORS Tuplin. votes 100 ; J. Milroy 94, R. A. Adams 93, W. Aitchison 87, W. Dixon 85, P. Mahony 74, J. Gibson 69, W. Howitt 66, A. Black 64. Works Committee comprises Councillors Milroy (chairman), Adams, Aitchison, Gibson, and Dixon. Finance Committee comprises the Mayor (chairman), Councillors Taplin, Gibson, Mahony, and Black. Meetings of Council are held on first Monday in.each month, at 7 p.m.

IT ARB OR BOARD, Patea. — IT Meetings held second Monday in each month. Members elected in February 1881 for two years ; namely, for Otoia Riding, H. S. Peacock ; for Hawera district, G, W. Gane ; for Waverley Riding, G. Newland ; nominated for County Council, K. Horner ; nominated for Patea Town Board (now Borough Council.), K. A. Adams, W. Aitchison. Government nominee, D. Coutts (cliairrnan). Patea District Agricultural & Pastoral Association, holds two shows yearly, Spring and Autumn. Annual meeting is held in April ; and the present members on the books are 135. F. DATE A District Farmers’ Club 1 holds meetings for discussion and business on the first Saturday in each month, in the Club-room, Patea. Subscription 10s a year ; entrance fee £l. The West Coast Land Commissioner has reported to Government an approximate estimate of Crown land available for settlement near Patea harbor, located in Road Board districts thus : Wairoa district 1,305 61.800 Patea East 4,219 87,800 Patea West 8,376 20,000 Hawera district 4,297 30,200 Ngaire district 2,507 Outlying districts 98,723 128,386 Agricultural. Pastoral.

Totals 114,427 281,186 Also the University reserve of 10,000 acres, near Patea, recommended for long leasing in farm sections of 200 to 500 acres each; The Government owns other large areas eastward of the Patea river, up the Mongaehu branch, where a vast extent of level bush country is known to be excellent for settlement.

‘ —ORS & DISTANCES. Patea breakwater is 1200 feet long, and the amount expended on construction, salaries, &c., since July ’77, is £13,887. Present depth on bar , 10 to 11 feet at ordinary spring tides. Sir John Coode estimated that by carrying the breakwater 400 feet further out (one-third longer than at present), a depth of 16 feet at ordinary spring tides will be attained,_ under unfavorable circumstances. This contemplates much better results _ as beingprobable ; and the depth attained at the present length of 1200 is greater than was expected. The cost so far has been very much less than the first estimate. Distances. —W.averley is 9 miles from Patea by railway route, as compared with 30 miles to Wanganui. _ Hawera is 18 .miles from Patea by railway route, as compared with 45 to WaitaraorSl to New Plymouth landing-pier. Manaia is 28 miles from Patea as compared with 54 to Waitara or 61 to New Plymouth landingpier.

A coach will leave Waverley daily (Sundays excepted) at 7 p.m., arrive Patea 8-40 p.m. Down ; leave Patea 6 a.m., arrive Waverley 7-30 in time catch the morning train for Wanganui, so as passengers leaving Patea can get to Wanganui and back on the same day.
