Coal in Hawke’s Bay. Napier.—Further samples of coal received from Mohaka exhibit much better quality, and prospectors report seams well defined and much more accessible to town.
FiresClyde.—A fire has destroyed Cattlcy’s bakery and Sanders’s butchery. Invercargill.—A large fire at Gore has destroyed Watson’s hotel and Beattie’s Flexible Harrow Factory. Insurances on hotel £950, and on Beattie’s Factory £6OO.
Banquet to Riflemen. Dunedin.—The banquet to Rifle Champions was very successful. It was stated as probable that the next meeting of the. Association would be at Dunedin.
Boy Drowned. Inch Clutha.—Peter Lawson, aged nine years, fell into the Clutha river and was drowned.
SUBSIDIES TO COUNTIES. Dunedin.—At the Tuapeka County Council it was stated that Major Atkinson has said he believed Government would bring down a proposal next session to subsidise County Councils to the extent £8 to £1 for the purpose of making main county roads.
