Betting—2 to 1 on the field, 214 in totalisator, 10 on Gem ; outside totalisator 284, 12 on Gem. Bad start. Amazon hung at the post or might have won. Wanganui Stakes Handicap of 250 sovs ; second horse to receive 50 out of the stakes ; third horse saves his stakes ; for three year olds and upwards ; distance, 2 miles; nomination, 3 sovs ;
acceptance, 5 sovs. Mr Westmacott’s Dauphin, Bst 11b (Hoskins) 1 Mr Martin’s Virginia Water, Bst 51bs, (Robinson) ... ... ... ... 2 Mr Chitham’s Dan 7st (Taylor) 3 Libeller and Kinoraig also started. 104 at £2 in totalisator, 37 on winner. Kincraig led for half a mile, but Dauphin went to the front, and won by half a length. Time—3mins 45secs. SECOND DAY. Wanganui, Friday.—The weather is bright, and the attendance is vastly increased, the grand stand presenting a pretty appearance. Handicap Hurdles. Agent, 12st 51bs (Lyford) 1 Catchem, Bst lOibs ... 2 Skylark and Totara also started, but both fell. Agent held back till the last halfmile, when Lyford took him to the front and won easily. Clarence was scratched. Hack Hurdles won by Higgie’s Alaric, beating eight others. Maiden Plate. Odd Trick (Wattie) 1 Kincraig ... ... ... ... 2 Bonnie Doon 3 Wattie made a pretty race of it, but won easily. WANGANUI CUP. The Cup race was run this afternoon amid great excitement, and was a capital race. Hailstorm (Powdrell’s) 1 Virginia Water 2 Dauphin (Westmacott) 3 Six started ; time 4 min. 13 secs. The stake is £6OO.
