The Licensing Committee added £4O a year to the Borough revenue yesterday, by granting the four extension licenses to Patea hotels. Each licensee will pay £2 10s a quarter extra for the extension to 12 o’clock ; and supposing they continue, the additional revenue be will £4O a year. This is one side of the question. The money for licenses comes out of many pockets—out of some whose owners can’t afford extra nips after ten o’clock. A rifle match between sides picked by Sergs. Kitching and Kells is arranged for Saturday next, at 300 and 500 yds. The following are the names of the respective teams : Sergt. Kitching, Sergt. Kells Lieut. King, Vol. T. Nuts ford, Corp. Chadwick, Vol. H. Nutsford, Corp. Carey, Vol. Baggett, Sergt. Harden, Vol. Barraclough, Vol. Hare, Vol. Haycock, Sergt. Smith, Corp. Powell, Vol. Dasent, Vo! J. McCarty, Sergt. Carey, Bandsman Neill. Accounts against the Borough Council were passed for payment at last meeting as follow:—Wages for labor £4 18s, 15s, £8 8s ; P. Larsen, wages £3 10s; Mahony and Co., 9s 9d; Keys, gravel £2l Is 7d; York and Cornfoot £3 16s 9d ; Potto, dog collars &c £lO ; J. Gibson £3 3s 4d ; Daily Mail, advertising £5 4s 6d; ditto advertising bye-laws and printing in pamphlet form, as per contract, £ll 16s I^-d; Taplin, L 5 2s 6d; Whitcombe, carting Bs. The audit of the late Town Board accounts, as made by Mr Macalister, was reported to the Borough Council bn Monday. The auditor had passed the accounts as correct, subject to observations attached. A loan of £SO to the Domain Board for three years without interest was noted thus: “ There is no statutory authority to warrant such a loan,” An error of £1 was found in Mr Hamerton’s account. A sum of 10s 6d was entered as paid to a person who had left the district, but no voucher was produced showing he had received the money. A little discussion ensued on the report. Councillor Aitcbispn said : The chairman of the Domain Board (Councillor Taplin) will doubtless see that the loan of £SO is duly returned. Councillor Taplin laughed. Councillor Milroy moved “ That the Town Clerk apply to the late Town i Clerk for the sum of 10s 6d mentioned in report.” Agreed to. At the parade of the Patea Ilifles last evening, Lieut. King, Color-Sergt. Kitching, and Corpl. Carey were pre-» sented with the medals won by them. After the parade, the, company marched to the bridge, preceded by torch-bearers; and the band played some spirited marches. • Mr Holcroft, Wanganui, calls attention to a reduction in price of Deefing’s twine-binder machines ; the reduction to apply to all orders received this season for machines required next year. After this season, the reduction will not apply. Kakararaea Licensing Committee held their first sitting to-day. Present : Messrs G. W. Gane (chairman), Wilson, and Brodie. No application for extension of hours was made. The only business was to hear the police report on the three public-houses in tha district. The management of each was reported “ good.” The house at Woodville was reported on, thus: “ Premises and furniture not in good repair.” .. .The Clerk was instructed to write to the licensee at Woodville. A boy never forgets the man who tips him. Nor the woman who tipshim—over her knee, and taps with her slipper.
The Rotorua sale has been a remark-
ably success. One cause has been that it was judiciously advertised. The hiirb rentals given for sections in this now town at the Hot Lakes should induce a speedy settlement. The importance ot a central township is great, for roads will be branching towards it from the settled coast-line, and railways will soon creep into that inland region of sulphur springs and wondrous terraces.
The men wbc carry advertising boards on breast and back along the pavement are sometimes called human sandwiches, but an old citizen says he can’t see any resemblance. There is too much meat between the slices. To find out who are the promising young men, ask the tailor. Those who put their money into telephone stock make a sound investment. The Premier has neglected to pay his property tax within the specified time, and has been punished with the per cent penalty. Verdict: Serve iiim right.
The inward ’Frisco mail is two days overdue at Auckland. The inward Suez mail arrived in this district to-day.
