AUCKLAND WHEAT GROWERS.
There has been some grumbling amongst farmers this season about the price of wheat, and about some supposed combination among millers in Auckland to keep down the price. We have taken some trouble to ascertain from a reliable source the exact cost of sending wheat to England from Canterbury, where there is a large trade, and we find the average to b6 2s a bushel, or 16s per quarter. With New Zealand wheat at 53s per. quater in London, which was the latest quotation by cable, there would be a return of 37s per quarter to the farmer here, or, in other words, 4s per bushel. By a combination amongst the farmers themselves, a shipment of one or two thousand bags might be made ns an experiment, and an advance could easily be procured upon a shipment of such size from any loan company doing business in the colony. This arrangement would enable the farmers to receive a good substantial cash advance upon their wheat, and take the risk of either a rise or fall in the London market. The supposed combination, as far as we can ascertain, is an entire mistake as regards Auckland buyers, and the farmers here are simply competing against Southern wheat which keeps the market down.—Auckland Herald.
