Can Felons Sit in Parliament?
A question will be raised in the House of Commons as to whether Davitt, who has just been elected in succession to Mr A. M. Sullivan, can be allowed to take his seat. Mr Gladstone has given notice of his intention to move that Davitt having been convicted of treason-felony is ineligible for a seat in the Legislature. The same point was upheld in the case of O’Donovan Eossa, who though elected was . not allowed to sit. Some Irish members are indignant at the action proposed to be taken, and intend to raise a long debate on the motion. A search commitmittee has been appointed to examine into precedents for the purpose of showing that the return of persons similarly situated has been heretofore recognised.
