BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL,

A special meeting of the Waverley Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, when it was resolved that tenders be at once called for forming the main street; also that the rate book be at once made up, rate to be one shilling in the pound. Re the protest forwarded by the Chairman of the Town Board to the County Council, signifying the intention of the Board to resist the collection of the dog tax by the County collector, it would appear that the Government themselves are in a fog as to whether the revenue from dog tax, auctioneers’ and publicans’ licenses will go to the town districts or the Counties, as the Colonial Secretary is reported to have telegraphed that he dots not think i he (own districts can claim them, being County revenue. The revenue from publicans’ licenses alone would considerably augment the Town Board funds. It certainly appears from the way the Act is worded that the town districts can claim them, they having all the powers of a borough as regards these matters. This is a question that should be at once decided. The protest forwarded to the Education Board re School Committee election fell through, the ruling of the Chairman being upheld by the Board. There will now, I suppose, bo a vacancy on the Committee, Mr Jackson having left the district.
