PREMIER AND THE NATIVES.
Ohincmutu, 27tli.—A large meeting was hold hero to-day for the purpose of presenting an address to the Premier. The address congratulated the Premier on his arrival, and thanked him for his visit. The Maoris thoroughly approved of the Thermal Springs Act of last session, and expected it would be the means of providing a living for themselves and their children. Other complimentary remarks wound up with God Save the Queen. The Premier replied in terms which elicited strong marks of approval from both Maoris and Europeans. The springs would attract persons from all parts of the world, and the natives would greatly benefit by improving the value of their land. He would lay their address before Parliament. He then asked the leading chiefs to explain their grievances to him. Several important matters are being discussed.
GAROTTING AFTER DARK. Christchurch.—Six cases of garotting are known to have occurred on Saturday night, and an anxious feeling prevails. Salvage of Steamer. Westport.—The steamer Westport was successfully floated early this morning. Promoting Land League. Wellington.—-A branch of the Land League succeeded last night in getting a meeting-place and electing officers. The principals are colonial born. A Nice Question. Wellington.—The Corporation have received notice to quit the office, as the rooms are required by the Government. The Corporation received authority to occupy from the Superintendent of the Province before the abolition, and they intend to contest the right of the Government to turn them out. Fire near Wellington. Meenkeen’s general store and house at Clareville was burnt last night. The residents had a narrow escape.
NELSON RIFLE MEETING,
Brightwater, this day.—Very dull weather to-day. The Otago match of 200 yards has just concluded. The prize-takers include Cooper, Auckland 47 ; Ixemmgton, Wanganui, 45; Purnell, Wanganui, 44 ; H. King and Douglas, Taranaki, 44 ; and others.
Afternoon.—The prize-takers in the Auckland match include Armstrong, of Thames, 49; Howie, Waverley,. 46 ; Mooseman, Wanganui, 45 ; Foster, Wanganui, 45; M’Leau, Waverley, 45; Cummins, Wanganui, 44; and Aamodt, Wanganui, 42. Brightwater, afternoon.—A general meeting of representatives will be held to-morrow, to take into consideration the question of having the meetings of the Association moveable, instead of as at present arranged.
