BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday.

The annual picnic in connection with the Sunday-school was. hold on Fiday last in Mr James Dickie’s paddock, kindly lent ‘for the occasion, when there was quite a large turn out of both old and young, the day being an exceptionally fine one. While the younger fry amused themselves by running races &c., the older ones indulged in the favorite pastime of cricket, rounders, and that mysterious and; complicated game of teazle. The usual amount of tea and cake &c. having been disposed of, and the children having departed to their various homes* an adjournment was made to Mr John Dickie’s barn, where the lovers of dancing tripped on the light fantastic toe until the small hours of the morning, all seeming to enjoy themselves thoroughly. A now cricket club has been formed in Waverley, called the Star Club. Although only lately formed, they have already played two matches, and others are. being arranged. The members turn out pretty regularly to practice, and in a short time I think Waverley will boast of some stars in the cricketing line. Some steps

should be taken during the coming winter to form a proper pitch, as the present pitch is not only very rough, but too near the fence. A more suitable pitch could bo made, more centrally situated, and with a little trouble and small expense a really good ground could be formed. The establishment of a reading-room here is talked of. The institute being already under the Ac t, and du/y incorporated, the chief difficulty seems to be waj’s and means. It is also argued by some that a reading-room would be little used if established. It is the intention of the Library Committee, I believe, to at once consider the matter.

WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD. A special meeting of the Wairoa Highway Board was held on Saturday, 25th instant, for the purpose of electing a Chairman and fixing date for election of a Warden to represent No. 5 Ward vice Mr T. W. Fisher, when Mr Johnson was elected Chairman. It was decided to hold the nomination of Wardens on Saturday, 4th March, at 1 p.m., in the old Town Hall. In the event of a poll, there will be polling booths at both Waverley and Waitotara, so that electors will have full opportunities of recording their votes. Several candidates are already spoken of as likely to come forward ; so that the election is likely to create a little excitement.
