This Day.
Foreign Influence in Egypt.
Paris, 23rd.—In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, M. Preycinet, Premier and Foreign Minister, made a statement relative to the future policy of the Government in Egypt. He stated that the concert of European Powers which now existed would minimise the danger of an armed intervention in the affairs of Egypt, and that the ControllerGeneral has been instructed to maintain French preponderance in that country. Collapse of Commercial Treaty. Paris, 23rd.—Negotiations for the conclusion of the new Anglo-French Commercial Treaty having virtually collapsed, the Minister of Commerce to-day introduced in the Chamber of Deputies a Bill providing that English goods should receive the “ most favored nation ” treatment. The produce of the British colonies is not included in the Bill, but will remain on the general tariff. English Cricket Team. Melbourne, 24th.—A cricket match was commenced here to-day between the English eleven and eleven of Victoria. The latter went in first, and when the stumps were drawn for the day they had put together 209 runs for the loss of eight wickets. The weather was very fine, but the attendance was only moderate. More Small-Pox. Melbourne, This Day,—Haynes Cook, passenger by the steamship Mirzapore, who is in quarantine here, has developed symptoms of small-pox. Russian Squadron. Pacific squadron sailed from here to-day.
