SAFES and FIRE.

A Napier journal says : Not one of tlic iron safes in the buildings recently burnt down answered the end for which they were intended. That belonging to Mr Fair, a Perry and Co’s patent, proved its worthlessness by revealing within when opened a mass of burnt paper and books, the latter scorched almost beyond recognition. A number of bank notes, some 170, we understand, which were deposited in a cash box inside, shared a similar fate, being all considerably charred; the numbers however, it is said, are recognisable. Mr Corn ford’s safe had to be forced open by a locksmith, when it was discovered that a large number of deeds and valuable papers witb which it was closely packed had all suffered more or less by the severe scorching to which they were subjected.
