CHILDREN BURNT TO DEATH. Dunedin.—A fire broke out in a small wooden house in Smith street, near corner of Dowling street, shortly after 4 o’clock this morning, and four children were burned to death. The man and wife got out through an upper window, leaving the children in bed, but it was not known for some time that anyone was left in the house, as little attention was paid to the maddening screams of the mother. When the Brigade arrived the house was enveloped in flames, and it would have been too late to render assistance. A two-storey house adjoining, occupied by Greenslade, who was owner of all the property destroyed, was also completely gutted. The building was insured for £3OO, but Greenslade estimates his loss at considerably more. The bodies of the four children have been recovered. Deputations to Premier. Thames.—The Premier reached here last night, and for several hours was engaged with deputations. He leaves this morning for Te Aroha, visiting mining centres on the way. The completion of the railway to Kapu is promised, but the application of the County Council for a loan of £7,000, to meet an overdraft at the bank was refused. Mining at Te Aroha. Thames.—Mr J. C. Firth erects a 40 head stamper battery at Te Aroha, for claims at the new find.
