Steamer in Quarantine,
Wellington, this day,—The steamer Wakatipn arrived from Sydney at 1 this morning, proceeded to the quarantine ground, and was admitted to pratique at noon. Four passengers, two saloon and two steerage, were quarantined ; among them being Jem Mace, of Melbourne, and members of Williamson Opera Company, en route for Dunedin. On the night of the 15th, Robert Roper, a steerage passenger) disappeared, and it is supposed ho Jel overboard.
Fires and Arson. Christchurch.—Two cottages near the Lunatic Asylum were burnt on Saturday. James Wright and his wife, who occupied one of them, have been arrested on a charge of arson. Dunedin.—A six-roomed cottage in Cumberland street was bnrat this morning. Insured for £250, and furniture for £250.
The following Herald special cable messages have been received at Wellington per Wakatipu, from Sydney ; Death of Offenbach. lOtli.—The death is announced of Mr Jacques Offenbach, the famous French musician and composer, at the age of 63 years. Insurrection. An armistice of 20 days, which was arranged through friendly mediation of Prince Nikita, of Mortenegro, has collapsed in Bosnia.
