MARKETS.

HAWKE’S BAY STOCK. MrM. R. Miller, Napier, reporting on the month of January, says ; The past month has been an exceedingly busy one in sales and deliveries of sheep, and for yonng breeding ewes the demand continues to exceed the supply. Fat wethers are at present plentiful, but boiling-down operations will soon relieve holders of this class of stock. In cattle there has been little business of any consequence doing—indeed, in this line there are a larger number in the market now for sale than there has been at any one time during the several past seasons. This chiefly arises from fear that the present dry weather may continue some time, and from the fact that there is less demand for fat cattle from Auckland than heretofore at this season. However, the demand for that market is expected to increase further on in (be year, and the local consumption is increasing steadily. On these grounds we may hope for a more active demand arising ere long. The harvest will, there is no doubt, realise expectations, and it is pleasant to note that we have a greater extent oi land in cereals this year than in any preceding season. In rye-grass seed there is a good yield, and parcels have already changed hands at 4s 6d, 4s 9d, and 5s per bushel for extra quality, and cocksfoot at to 4d per lb.
