A man named Gilmour is missing from Hawera, and there is reason to fear he has met with an untimely end. Friends at New Plymouth solicit information, as per advertisement. The new Borough Council of Hawera held its first meeting on Friday, and Mr McGuire delivered an inaugural address as Mayor. He indicated a programme of local works, including a water supply, the formation of streets and footpaths, the employment of “ five or ten men at once to see to the streets,” the appointment of a nuisance inspector, and a clerk to act as valuator &c. A loan would be necessary, and an overdraft should be arranged to carry on at present. Mr Wanklyn was appointed clerk to the borough, salary to be fixed later. The Pilot, Mr Wood, reported to the Harbor Board yesterday as follows: There is a large bank across the entrance, with two channels, the south channel entrance being close.to the old boulder bank, and too dangerous to work owing to the outer bank pressing so close, and on account of the broadside seas- The north channel entrance is to the westward of breakwater, with two sharp turns, and is very difficult to work with bad weather and heavy seas, especially at neap tides. It would not be safe for vessels to enter drawing more than oft. Gin. at neap tide. The space from breakwater to north spit is very narrow, only 57 feet. The depth along breakwater is 15 feet, and the bar 9 feet at spring tides. Thirty-one vessels crossed the bar since last report; 4 crossing at night.
