The Patea s.s. arrived in Wellington yesterday at 2 a.m., and leaves for Patea to-night at 8 p.m. In the last pension list appears the name of Mr R. Parris as drawing £315 a year. He has received in all to dale £4,214. It shonld.be stated, however, that he was pressed to take office under the West Coast Commission, his wish being to remain in retirenient. Mr H. A. Arthur offers a reduction of 12£ per cent, to clear ont some of his extensive stock of furniture and make room for alteration of premises. A fenced section near Otakeho, 268 acres, is to he gold on easy terms by Nolan & Co. on the 22m1. Mr Bryce, Defence Minister, passed through this morning by coach northward. It is said he will be five or six weeks in Taranaki and Auckland districts. Mr Haddow, hairdresser, wishes to contradict a statement that he is abont to leatJ Patea. Carey’s Juvenile Opera Company announce two entertainments in Patea— Wednesday the “ Pirates of Penzance,” and Thursday “ Chilperic ” and “ Pinafore.” _ . Messrs R. H. Nolan and Go’s pure bred ram sale takes place at their Hawera yards on Thursday next. The sire of these rams was imported by Messrs McLean and Co, and cost 150 guineas' in England, and the dams cost an average of 60 guineas. Two Shropshire Downs will also be submitted.

The opening of a new Maori meeting house erected by Major Te Wheore at To Karaka, Punin, Waikato district, has been celebrated in grand style by the natives. An immense quantity of kai was provided for the feast. On the second day there was some very good horse'racing, giving plenty of sport, the horses being evidently rnn to win. Tawhiao and his sons, Major Mair, and a large number of settlers were present. The Waikato Mail reports: The small birds nuisance has made itself so severely felt in Raglan, one of the earliest places to which Mr T. B, Hill forwarded a pair of sparrows, that grain growing with profit is rendered almost impossible. A charge of abduction at Ashburton has been settled by the alleged abductor, Fowler, promising to marry the girl. As the girl consented to the arrangement, a remand of eight days was allowed for the nuptials; a bond of £25 being taken lo ensure performance.

For the “ Ladies Court” at Christchurch Exhibition, two of the bays have been set aside, free of charge. Exhibits will comprise fancy needlework, .lace, embroidery, painting on silk and velvet, leather work, fancy picture frame work, &c., &c. During January, £62 17s 6d only was dispensed in Wellington on account of relief rations. This shows a reduction of £3O on the average monthly account for the whole of last year. The Wellington Naval Brigade are sending five representatives to compete at the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting at Nelson, the choice of men to be fired for. The Wesleyan Conference at Adelaide have passed resolutions in favor of Bible reading in State schools. By means of a diamond drill the discovery has been made of a seam of soft shale lift, in thickness on the North Shore, Sydney.
