Second Edition Railway Compensation Claims.
The claims of Messrs Durie Brothers and Mrs Durie, for land taken at Waitotara for railway purposes, were heard at Waitotara on Friday, before Mr C. A. Wray, R.M., as sole arbitrator. Mr Fitzherbert, assisted by Mr H. M. Brewer, appeared for the Government ; and the claimants were represented by Mr Duncan.
The Messrs Durie claimed £579 8s for portion of freehold taken and for depreciated value of Maori leased land by loss of timber gully for firewood, and by loss of water through severance. Mrs Durie claimed £387 for freehold land taken. A ballast pit on one of the properties formed a large item in the claim. Mr Brewer had offered, on behalf of Government, a total compensation of £3OO, Evidence as to value was taken on Friday, the Court sitting till nearly 10 p.m. Mr Wray gave his decision to-day, the total award on both claims being £392, or £92 in excess of the Government valuation.
