Report on Scab in Sheep.
The first indication of a change is the appointment of a new inspector for the Wanganui district. We understand that Mr T. Richardson has been selected as a highly competent, active, and intelligent inspector, and that he will take an oversight of the Patea district. The Patea inspector will, however, have direct communication with the Inspector General in Wellington.
The Patea inspector has sent a report to Government on the condition of scab in sheep within Patea and Hawera districts at the end of January. The following flocks had been previously declared infected, and though some are now clean (in the inspector’s opinion), the time for officially declaring them clean has not fully elapsed:
Owner Sheep Pemarhs Walkinton, Waverley... 1280 Believed clean Ball, Kakaramea 600 To boil down Aiken, Manutahi 800 Believed clean Hawken, Kakaramea ... 1 750 ~ „ Powdrell, Kakaramea... 225 No disease Peacock, Manutahi 2600 Easily cleaned Turner, Kakaramea ... 311 „ Wilson Bros.,Hawera... 820 „ Crookcr, Waihi 1680 „ Winks, Hawera 200 „ Muir. Hawera 130 ~ Nichol Sc Shearer, do ... 800 „ Hobbs, Hawera 1150 „ R. B. Hamilton, Man.... 2250 ~
The total number thus officially reported as infected is 14,926, including the six flocks recently infected by sheep from Wanganui. Those flocks which could be “ easily cleaned” are reported on by the inspector thus:—“l could clean each of the nine lots in one good dip of sulphur and tobacco, if they were in my possession.”
