IRISH HOME RULERS.
London, 9th.—ln the House of Commons to night, a motion introduced by Patrick J. Smith, member for Tipperary, demanding the establishment of Home Rule for Ireland, was rejected on division, after a comparatively brief debate.
Mr Gladstone’s Reply.
London, 10th.—In the course of the debate last night on Mr Smith’s motion for the establishment of Home Rule for Ireland, the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone stated that he was fully alive to the importance of local autonomy for that country, but Government were reluctantly compelled to postpone consideration of the question. He commented on the divergence of views expressed in speeches of different Home Rulers, and advised them first to agree to define the respective functions of the Irish and Imperial Parliaments.

New York, 10th. —Sir Henry Parkes, Premier of New South Wales, has arrived in this city.

It is reported of Sir Henry Parkes, while in San Francisco, that the opinions of leading politicians give little encouragement to hope that the Premier’s mission in respect of wool duties will prove successful. The general belief in political circles is that the proposals for the remission of the duties on Australian wool cannot be entertained by the Government of the United States, being inconsistent with the protectionist policy of the Republic. Intercolonial Cricket.
Sydney, This Day.—The return intercolonial cricket match between Eleven of Victoria and New South Wales was commenced here yesterday. The local team went in first and remained in the whole day. When the stumps were drawn they had put together 350 runs for a loss of only 3 wickets : Murdoch not out 183. and Jones also not out for 91.
Explanation by Egypt.
Cairo, 9th.—ln consequence of the protest of Anglo-French ControllcrsGcneral, the Egyptian Government has taken occasion to explain to ConsulsGeneral for England and France that fact. The Assembly of Notables will have power to vote the Budget, but will in no way interfere with rights which are exercised by the British and French Controllers over the Financial and other Departments of the State, Suicide of a Sheriff. Sydney, this day. Under-Sheriff Burlow has committed suicide by poison. The cause of the act is unknown.
Threatened Miners’ Strike.
Sydney.—News is to hand from Newcastle that a general strike of the miners of that district for an increase of wages is deemed to be imminent.
