(TER UNITED I’RESS ASSOCIATION.) This Day. Mail Steamer at Auckland. Auckland, 6th.—The City of Sydney sailed from San Francisco on January 15th, and arrived at Auckland at 7 o'clock this evening. Besides New Zealand passengers there were 25 for Sydney, and 260 tons of cargo for Auckland, and 1021 packages of merchandise for Sydney. The steamer sails for Sydney at 3 a.m. The Great Fire at Gisborne. INSURANCE LOSSES. Government Insurance Lecturer. Wellington.—Mr Henry Clapcott has been appointed general lecturer for the colony to the Government Insurance Department, It is intended to revive and push the industrial braneh of the business. Musical Competitions. Christchurch.—Messrs Joubert and Twopeny intend holding a grand competitive musical festival, lasting a week, during the exhibition. There will bo gold, silver, and bronze medals for class singing, band contests, vocal and instrumental solos, school and children’s glees. The contests will be open to the colony. Found Drowend. Blenheim.—The body of a man about So years of age was found in Opari river this morning. It is unidentified as yet. Lyttelton Graving Dock. Christchurch. —The last stone of the Lyttelton graving dock was laid on Saturday.
