PATEA DAILY MAIL.

Monday Evening, Feb. 6, 1882.

Published every Evening, Price Id. Circulation nearly 600 : average last quarter 510. Politics, Independent.

Caterpillars are numerous on the Plains. The road between Kakararaea and the Tongaboe stream is in a bad state of repair at present. What will it be in the winter ? On Saturday, the 2nd squad firing for the officers medal was continued ; Sergeant Harden scored 52, Volunteer Baggett 42. Farmers this side of Hawera are complaining of the small birds devouring their crops. One farmer who seems to have a good crop of bats, says that when cut he, does not expect to have more than five to ten bushels to the acre. Another says that since cutting his oats the birds have taken to eating the wheat. ■ The Government auditor, Mr Macalister, has finished the audit of local accounts, and he left for the South on Saturday afternoon. He went through the accounts of the defunct Town Board, and certified to their correctness. He audited the Harbor Board accounts, and found them correct. He also went through the County Council accounts, but as they were not presented in a form which he could certify to as correct, he did not pass them on this occasion. We do not clearly understand what items Mr Macalister objected to, and we here mention the matter in order that : the County Council may ascertain why their accounts could not be certified to after audit. One item he calls attention to is £45 10s paid to the late chairman as travelling expenses in the year ended June last. The auditor had made a memorandum requesting the then chairman to refund that amount on the ground that he had received the money as “travellingexpenses,” whereas a chairman living in Pa tea could not be said to have “ travelled ” to the Council Chamber, unless returning at some odd time from another part of. the district. The £45 10s has not been repaid to tho County fund account, although the auditor requested it; and Mr Dale’s explanation is that the Council did not require him to do it, as the Council knew he had paid the £45 10s to!the Hospital as a donation. The effect of that 1 would Be that the Government paid a subsidy of equal amount to, the Hospital, which thereby gained a total of £9l. The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society has recommended that hares should be killed all the year round in places where it is necessary to keep them down.

The Borough Council will meet this evening to elect an engineer, who shall also be a surveyor. Among the nppli cants are Mr Harden and Mr Tregear, the latter having previously acted as surveyor to the Town Board before taking an appointment under the West Coast Commission. He wishes to settle again in Patea. A new industry is being started in Patea. Messrs Williams Brothers, lessees of the Boiling-down Works at the heads, have to-day commenced erecting additional machinery for preparing tinned ar.d potted meats for Home export. When the new branch of the boiling-down business is in full work, the machinery will put through 30 bullocks a week, besides utilising the fancy meats from fat mutton in the boiling season. This is one of many industries which could be started in and around Patea, for the convenient export of produce and manufacture. A return cricket match, Banks and Civil Service v. Patea Cricket Club, will be played next Saturday at Patea ; play commencing at 1-30 sharp. The Patea Club will be represented by Messrs Jacob (captain), Jacorab, Taplin, Read, F. T.r Horner, -EU C. Horner, W. Harden, C. Harden, Arundell, Black, and Windsor. Emergency men: Gibbons, Sheild, and Nntsford. The Civil Service and Banks will be represented by Messrs Fraser, Coutts, Rose, Dascnt, Redgrave, Baggett, Finnerty, Tennent, Norman, Booth, Hyams, Dean, and Powell. Matches with Pungarehn and New Plymouth at Easter, have been finally arranged. The Secretary will feel obliged if members who have not paid subscription will give him a call before Saturday next. The meeting of Parliament is further postponed till the 4th April, but there is no assurance that it will then meet for despatch of business. Sir George Grey got np a deputation to the Premier Inst week, intending to urge the immediate assemblage of Parliament, but the Premier did not happen to be at the place expected. This is rather like that other incident of correcting proofs in the. House while Sir George Grey was speaking. Those two opposing politicians should try conciliation, by way of a change, A cricket match between the Waverley Junior Cricket Club and the Patea United Cricket Club was played at Patea on Saturday, resulting in a win for Patea by four -runs. Very small scores were made : Patea scoring in their first innings 29, Haycock making 8 and Hyams 5. Waverley’s first resulted in 23, H. Dyke having scored 11.., Patea in their second innings scored only 16, Doneghne making 7. Waverley thus had 22 to get to tie. This, however, they were unable to do, the last wicket falling for 18.
