Licensing Committees for the several districts hereabout will have to be elected this month. Each borough (not divided into wards) is to have a separate Licensing Committee, so that Patea and Hawera must each elect its committee. The other divisions are the Ridings of a County, a committee being elected for each. Any road district outside a County will have a separate committee. No, paid officer under Government can be elected to a Licensing Committee, and no person interest'"! in the liquor trade or interested in any licensed premises can be elected. A committee is to consist of five persons to be elected annually by the ratepayers of the district, same as for the election to local bodies, the R.M. to be returning officer. The Licensing Committee is to hold its sitting quarterly in the Court House, three to be a quorum. All licenses are to be subject to the new Act. New licenses can be granted by the committee, but every such new license is subject to confirmation or not by a poll of ratepayers, to be taken as at local elections ; the voting to be on these questions: (1) that the number of publican’s licenses may be increased; or (2) that the number may not be increased. New Zealand licenses may be granted in boroughs, subject to the same process of popular vote. The day for electing a Licensing Committee for Patea borough is the 15 th instant, and that for Otoia Riding is the 20th, as advertised. Mr Cowern will offer for sale tomorrow. the leasess of property belonging to Mr Furlong, as advertised ; also furniture and sundries. The Taranaki Rifle Volunteers will be represented at the ; prize firing at Nelson by Captain Ellis, Lieutenant Hoskin, Sergeant Okey, and Volunteers F. Okey, Holmes, and E. Howell. The sum of £25 has been voted to defray the expenses of the representatives.
