This Afternoon. E AGING ACCIDENT. Wellington.—A sad accident happened on the racecourse this morning. Thomas Monaghan, rider of Fleur de Lys, was doing a final gallop before the Cup race, together with the rider of Somnns, when he ran against a post by the rail leading to the grand stand, and fractured his leg below the knee. Ho was conveyed to the Hutt, where Dr Wilford recommended his removal to hospital, which was done.
Mr M’Alister, Government auditor, arrived from Wellington yesterday, and is engaged in auditing the. accounts of the late Town Board and of the Borough Council up to the date of Mr Harris handing over the books and documents to the new Town Clerk, Mr M’Alister will also audit the accounts of the Harbor Board and of the County Council. Some Alpine climbers have just arrived in Melbourne en route to New Zealand. The Wairaate. (South Island) people are endeavoring to establish, in connection with their Horticultural Society, an exhibition of grain and roots. New South Wales has made upon her railways a profit of £673,000. Her debt is about £15,000,000. The railways have paid nearly per cent, on her debt. When will New Zealand do the same ? Some day, as sure as we write these lines.
