The North Canterbury Caledonian Society has received acknowledgment of £l6 sent Home for the relief of the Shetland Islanders. The writer, in his communication, stated that the sum of £9700 had already been subscribed towards the fund, of which amount about £IOOO had been expended. It was expected that about £7OOO would be required for providing pensions at the rate of 2s 6d per week for the widows, and Is 6d for children under 14 years of age, the balance remaining for the formation of a permanent fund. A Timaru firm recently sent the fleeces of 100 black sheep to the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufactory for manufacture, and in due course received the cloth, consisting of 140 yards, back. The quality of the cloth is highly spoken of.
