Mr Barton, solicitor, will return to Patea on Saturday, with Mrs Barton. Mr John Gibson is prostrated by an unfortunate breakdown of the nervous system. He was digging in the garden at his new residence, when his nervous energy collapsed suddenly, and he fell apparently paralysed. He is under medical care. Mr Gibson had an injury to the spine some years ago, and possibly the old weakness has caused the present collapse. Home letters by to-day’s outward mail can be posted till 7 p.m. in Patea. Among persons difficult to please is Mr D. M. Harris. He sent an abusive letter, which was printed exactly as received, the big capitals and the erratic marks of punctuation being copied exactly. Having taken this extra care-to please him, he now writes again, still more abusively, and actually alleges that his previous letter was “garbled ” in the printing. What can be done with Mr Harris? Does anybody know how to stroke him down the right way ? Patea West Valuation List is open for inspection, as advertised. Also the Valuation List for Waverley town district. Received, a reply from Mr W. Williams to the Wanganui Herald re “ confiscation.” Subscribers near Kohi can now have papers left daily at corner of Nicholson’s road. The Premier received a deputation at Hawera yesterday, comprising about 20 residents, and Mr Barleyman read a long list of local wants, set forth in eleven paragraphs. These included the early completion of the railway, with Hawera located on the main line, grievances as to carriage of timber, the importance of having the Supreme Court to sit at Hawera for criminal business, as nearly all cases of this kind at that Court are for offences committed in Hawera district, also the inadequacy. of the Hawera Court House, an increase of police force, and several other smaller matters. The Premier referred to several of the topics, disapproving of the request for the Supreme Court to be removed to Hawera. The main railway would join on Hawera, but the-trial survey was not advanced enough to enable him to say whether the line would go inland or by the coast. A site for cattle yards at the Station was agreed to, later in the day.
The District Court at Patea, formerly in Wanganui district, has been proclaimed to be in Taranaki district, and sittings are appointed to be held on the second Wednesday in the months of January, April, July, and October, instead of second Monday as formerly. For the Hawera Borough Council twelve candidates are nominated for the nine seats, namely, Messrs Baker, Hobbs, King, Lynch, Milmoe, Partridge, McL’Dowie, Pritchard, Riddiford, Shearer, Syme, and W. M. Thomson. The election is fixed for February Bth. The three candidates for the Mayoralty are nominated, namely Messrs J. Davidson, F. M’Guire, and J, Winks. The Premier is proceeding by the Coast road to New Plymouth, for land. , The silver which went down in the Tararua in April last is not yet abandoned. Divers intend to blow off the main deck with dynamite, hoping then to get the treasure. Every one of the six lots of sheep, out of the 2,000 that came from Wanganui to Hawera, have been found to contain scab—so says the Star. At the parade of the Hawera Rifles last ; evening, one of the members of the corps appeared to be in a state of intoxication. Captain Bayly at once put him under arrest, and subsequently deprived him of his arms and dismissed him.— Star.
