TIMARU BREAKWATER AND THE GALE.
A southern journal says —A heavy swell commenced to roll into the Timaru roadstead on Friday, 13'h. In the evening the rollers were breaking over the outer end of the mole, and dashing against the wave-breakers in magnificent style, a large number of people being attracted to the wharf by the sight. Next morning the sea was a little heavier, and its colour showed the effect of the swell on the bottom and in grinding up the shingle on the beach. Some little amount of damage was done to the works in progress, as generally happens when a heavy sea comes. The sleepers of the crane rails at the extreme end of the works were forced up and the rails bent, but the timbers have been recovered. The scour at the bottom had the effect of sinking the outmost blocks a few inches, securing them a solid foundation before the cap block is put on. The City of Cashmere was washed ashore, and is a complete wreck.
Large Fire at Queenstown. A fire at Queenstown, Lake Wakalipu, on Monday afternoon, destroyed some seven or eight business places. The total loss is said to be £3,000, half covered by insurance in the Union, Victoria, and National offices. The storekeeper in whose premises the fire originated, bad gone to Invercargill early in the morning, leaving his place locked up. It is the general opinion that the fire was the act of an incendiary. Later.—The supposed incendiary is in custody at Dunedin.
