They will stay two days, returning to Auckland. Growth of a City. Auckland.—The valuer reports the erection of 228 new buildings in the city during the year. Public Hall. New Plymouth.—The directors of the new Hall Company offer £SO for the best plan for the proposed new building, Otago Leases. Wellington.—One hundred and seventythrec runs, comprising 2,309,217 acres of Crown lands in Otago, will be offered for lease by public auction on Monday. Fire. Wellington, 25th.—A fire broke out in a store, formerly occupied by Mr E. W. Mills, in Hunter-street. The brigade were quickly on the spot, and extinguished the fire before much damage was done. The origin of the fire is unknown. Stopping the Totalisator. Dunedin.—Pirie, hairdresser, was fined £5 each on two separate informations for keeping a totalisator open in his shop on the recent Southland races. Notice of appeal was given.

The cricket match was resumed at 11.30 this morning. Fine weather, and moderate attendance. Shrewsbury and Scotton, not-outs of previous day, faced the bowling of Bayley and Coutts ; and off Coutts’ first ball Shrewsbury was neatly taken at short slip by Cross, no addition being made to yesterday’s total. Emmett then joined Scotton, but after adding one gave a chance to Merchant, which was taken. Scoring—7, 1 ; 186. Shaw, the captain, filled the gap, but immediately lost Scotton, who was caught at long-on by Armitage off Bayley ; 8, 20; 186. Pilling came in and the score was raised to 202, when Shaw drove Bayly into 1 Alpe’s hands ; 9, 14 ; 202. Peate, the last man, came in with change of bowling, Ljmch relieving Coutts at the south end. Ashburton, 26th. —The conference of delegates of county and borough councils was held to-day, and it was decided to obtain local administration of charitable aid. Suicide. Ashburton.—John Brown, a settler near Ashburton, committed suicide by hanging. He was in good circumstances, and no cause can be assigned, for the act. A verdict of “ self-destruction while in a fit of temporary insanity ” was returned. The harbor dredge has been tried at the breastwork, Napier, and shown itself thoroughly capable of performing the work required of it. It sunk a hole seven feet deep in three dips of the bucket, thus showing that the bottom can be easily dredged.
