Ashburton, 26th. —The conference of delegates of county and borough councils was held to-day, and it was decided to obtain local administration of charitable aid. Suicide. Ashburton.—John Brown, a settler near Ashburton, committed suicide by hanging. He was in good circumstances, and no cause can be assigned, for the act. A verdict of “ self-destruction while in a fit of temporary insanity ” was returned. The harbor dredge has been tried at the breastwork, Napier, and shown itself thoroughly capable of performing the work required of it. It sunk a hole seven feet deep in three dips of the bucket, thus showing that the bottom can be easily dredged.
