This Afternoon. A Slippery Debtor. Christchurch. —An exciting chase after a debtor occurred to-day. He had failed to comply with the demands of an order on a judgment-summons, and had been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, and. was being marched off by a couple of bailiffs. He was ordered, to get into a four-wheeler, which he did, and promptly got out on the other side. The bailiffs gave , chase, and a fine run resulted. By dodging found corners and in and out of alleys, the debtor actually, got clear off. Strength of Wesleyan Body. Christchurch.—The following statistical return was read at the Wesleyan Conference :, Ministers, 84 ; college, 1; members, 4346; on trial, 717 ;. catechumens, 610; communicants, 1161; Sunday schools, 164 ; scholars, 13,922 ; adherents, 38,256.
