The monthly inspection parade of the Patea Rifles and Cadets takes place this evening. The district prize-firing for Cadets was to have come off this morning, but owing to some misunderstanding as to the size of target, the firing has been postponed till to-morrow morning. The Good Templar lodge of Patea have erected a memorial headstone over the grave of Mr Howitt’s son, who was a young member of this body. The inscription is as follows :—■“ Erected by the Star of Patea 1.0. G.T. to the memory of their late brother, G. S. Mackay Howitt, who died Sept. 9th 1881. (Yerseby.a friend.) Dear George, we’ll not forget you now, Neither in work nor play ; Although yonr body is laid low, To be like you we’ll pray. The tender of Hallenstein Brothers is accepted for Supplying uniforms to the Hawera Rifle corps.
