“ A subject for enquiry ” is mentioned in terms not too severe by the Hawera Star. The facts are similar to others which have become, notorious nearer to Patea. The ; Hawera case is reported thus:—■ “ About' ten days ago a mob of 2000 sheep were driven into this district, Inspector Gerse, of -Wanganui, by telegram, informing Inspector McKenzie that they were perfectly clean. The sheep were sold in Hawera, and distributed among six farms, but an examination.: of:{three of the six has resulted in scab being discovered i®each. The - farms "are those of Mr.' Crocker, Messrs Wilson Bros., and Mr. Winks ; and, of course, under the Act the whole-of the sheep on these farms -have been-declared- infected. Though not officially, reported, clean, it is well known that practically the district (Hawera) has been; and it is really too bad,, after all the, efforts that have been ;: made ’ with J such Success to eradicate scab, the sheep owners should be put to the loss and inconvenience of again cleaning their flocks, owing to the carelessness, or worse, of the Wanganui inspector.’ ' 'We-hdpe that some explanation of the occurrence will be made public.”
