Dates for sittings of the Assessment Courts in this judicial district were notified in yesterday’s issue by advertisement. The Court will sit at Patea February 28th, when a number of objections to the Borough assessment roll are likely to be heard. The Raugitikei Advocate says: Kerei, a Maori living at Awapuni, has for some time been regarded as a prophet among his people, and his fame has even reached to the Waikato. He predicts with great confidence all kinds of events. The fact that he has not washed himself for two years, together with his really clever allegorical speeches, has stamped him as a man of note. This : man will yet make a stir amongst his people if not among ours,, His long speeches at Awahuri last week were received with peculiar enthusiasm. J. A. Morgan, of Canterbury,, has devised a new plan for the preservation of the tubers; and he appears; to have destroyed their germinating power, whilst retaining their nutritive; and palatable properties unimpaired. A small trial ’shipment is being sent to Erigland, and another lot to India. Mr Morgan is making application; for n patent for his process.
