PATEA DAILY MAIL. Published every Evening, Price Id. Circulation nearly 600 : average last quarter 510. Politics, Independent. Wednesday Evening, Jan. 18, 1882.

Patea Valuation List of the borough is notified as open for inspection. The Pleasure Party will appear at the Harmonic Hall to-morrow. Sir W. Fox holds a sitting at Opunaki to-day, for settling the reserves Nolan & Co.’s stock sale at Hawera takes place to-morrow, when oyer 800 sheep and cattle will be offered. A farewell compliment in the shape of a social dance was arranged in reference to the departure of Miss Dasent from the district, consequent on her father’s removal to the curacy of Karori. The dance came off last night in the Harmonic Hall, and was numerously attended by friends and well-wishers. At a parade of the Patea Rifles last night, Captain Black informed the men that he was being prosecuted for a criminal libel. He had, therefore, placed his resignation in the hands of the officers of the corps; and if he was acquitted he would be happy to rejoin them either as officer or private. The command of the corps would fall on Lieutenant Chapman, who is absent at present. Lieutenant King, who takes command until his return, explained that any person charged with a criminal offence cannot hold a commission in her Majesty’s service. He thought Captain Black had taken the right course in sending in his resignation, which would be held in abeyance. If Captain Black escaped scatheless, he hoped the company would re-instate him as captain. He also requested the company to attend to their drill, and help to work the corps to a state of efficiency. The district prize-firing takes place on Monday morning, and the Government inspection on Tuesday evening.

Railway compensation cases in this district are receiving the attention of Mr C. E. Brewer, who represents the (Government, and is now here to negotiate settlements. He will be in Hawera a day or two, and will then return to Patea to enquire into claims with a view to settling or referring to. arbitration. Farmers will probably be of opinion that losses caused through the insufficiency of the railway fence, in keeping safe neither cattle nor sheep, should also receive consideration. Mr Brewer may think otherwise. Mr Herbert announces that he is commencing the tailoring business at his residence near Mr Mullen’s Masonic Hotel. He intends, we believe, to extend his house in form of a shop as soon as the permanent level of Bedford •treet is fixed and formed. Building along that street is certain to extend, when it is made a good broad approach to the town.
