Present— Messrs Hnnter (chairman), Godkin, Inkster, Livingston, Marchant, and Yorke, The Chairman reported that he had written to the Colonial Treasurer re subsidy, and to the Patea County Council about an adjustment of accounts, but had received no reply from cither. The bye-laws committee had not met, and no bye-laws had therefore been prepared. MANAGING COUNTY ROADS. A letter was read from the Hawera Road Board, expressing its willingness to undertake work for the Council. Through a misunderstanding, no application had been made to the Waimate and Ngaire Road Boards, but it was understood that they would be willing to act for the Council, though the latter body would strongly dissuade the Council from attempting to do any repairs to the Mountain road until the gravelling has been properly done by the General Government. Mr. Murray Thomson’s land sale at Opunake on Saturday was well attended, but bidding was slack for the most valuable lands. Section 12, block 88 (corner section), was bought in at £6 per foot, the reserve being £7 ; section 11, same block, back corner section, was bought in at £75, £IOO being reserve. Subdivision of suburban section 24, acre allotments, were sold as follows: Allotment 4, W. Middleton, £4O ; 3, Mr Hawke, £3B; 2, Mr Maysmor, £35; 1, Mr Affleck, £33. Section 1, block 89, quarter-acre has since been sold for £IOO. — Star. A sensible decision on the road question in Hawera County is reported by our correspondent. The new Council finds the Road Boards arc willing to take the care of main roads by expending the sums allotted for maintaining each section ; and it is settled to work on this simple plan in preference to setting up a costly central establishment.
Several hundred packages of Australian butter, taken in the Europe’s refrigerating chambers, were sold at auction in London on the 14 th, and realised an average of lid per lb.
