More Emigrants.
So great is the tide of emigration to Australia, and New Zealand, that we learn from a private Home letter that three Orient steamers sailing fortnightly to Australia had all the cabins booked in advance. Any person booking first or second class about the end of November could not sail till the fourth steamer after that date. Suppose there were a direct steam service running now to New Zealand, what would be the effect on settlement ? Money would be flowing in, and men of moderate means would be looking about in quest of new land or improved farms ; and a general stimulus would be given which should make us all feel the smile of prosperity. More is to be gained by a direct steam service than by any other device of politicians or speculators. It is to a steam service that we must look for developing the export of frozen meat and perishable produce, and it is to a steam service that we must look for attracting emigrants of the right stamp.
