(I’ER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) This Bay. Export of Potatoes. Christchurch.—An important experiment is being tried in connection witk the shipment of potatoes. Mr Morgan has devised a new plan for the preservation of the tubers, and appears to have destroyed their germinating power whilst retaining their nutritive and palatable properties unimpaired. A small shipment is being sent to England by Mr Cunningham, and another lot to India. Mr Morgan is making application for a patent. Fumigating the Mails. Wellington.—The Government state that the delay in failing to provide means for fumigating the English mail at Auckland is attributable to the negligence of the Auckland Hai'bour Board, they having full power in the matter, and Government can do nothing without their consent. CRICKET—ENGLISH v. OTAGO. Dunedin, 12th. The Otago eleven played their first innings to-day, the “ tail ” cutting off badly. Rattray played best, but Harris also got 11 and Vernon 13. Christchurch.—At the weekly sale of stock on Wednesday, there was only a small supply of fat sheep, and the bidding was animated. Prime crossbreds, lls to 12s 3d; medium, 8s to 9s ; average, 13s 4d per lb; fat lambs, 5s to 7s ; prime, 7s 6d to 8s 6d; fat cattle, 17s fid to 19s per lOOlbs. Harvest operations are proceeding vigorously. Wheat 4s to 4s 2d ; oats, Is lOd to Is lid; feed, 2s to 2s Id, for old; barley, 3s 9d to 3s lOd ; flour, £l9 10s per ton ; rye grass, 3s 3d to 3s fid ; cocksfoot, 3d to 4d. Good Templars in Taranaki. New Plymouth.—Yesterday a deputation from the Rechabites waited on the Grand Lodge with an address of welcome and congratulation, which was responded to by Sir William Fox. The election of officers was postponed till to-day. Taranaki BreakwaterNew Plymouth.—The steamer Westport arrived this morning at Moturoa with cement for New Plymouth harbor works, and will land it at the breakwater. Election Judges. Wellington. Justices Williams and Johnston have been appointed to try petitions under the Election Petitions Act. Mishaps at Sea. Lyttelton .—The Circe brigantine, from' Poo Chow Sept, 27, arrived at Lyttelton, reports a fatal accident. While running before a strong S.S.W. gale, a heavy sea broke on the starboard quarter, staving in the bulwarks and filling the cabin with water. The man at the wheel, J. Robertson, was rendered almost insensible. The boatswain was found lying quite dead, his body seriously mutilated.
Elections and Appeals. Wellington, 12th.—The petition of Mr Ivess against the return of Mr Wason for the Wakanni seat has been received by the Chief Justice. Argument in the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn’s case will be taken before the Chief Justice tormorrow morning. The members of the Government have, through the Premier, presented Mr George Beetham, M.H.R., with a valuable gold watch and chain in appreciation of his valuable services during 1880 and 1881. The return of Mr George Gerald FitzGerald for Hokitika is gazetted. Invercargill.—C, R. Martin is committed for trial on a charge of plural voting at the recent election at Wallace. PHARAZYN’S APPEAL-VERDICT. Wellington.—Argument on appeal in the Personation Case against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn was taken before the Chief Justice this morning. His Honor held that the special verdict was one of guilty, and sentenced the accused to one hour’s imprisonment; sentence to take effect from commencement of Court’s sitting. Stealing £IOO. Wellington.—Tubb, who was arrested on a charge of stealing £IOO belonging to the firm of Tubb & Fergus, Tituaru, has been remanded to Tiraaru. Fire at Nelson. Nelson.—A seven-roomed house in Wellington St, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mr Munday, the occupier, had furniture insured for £l5O and Mr H. D. Williams had the house insured for the same amount. Origin of fire unknown ; nothing saved.
Mr Chisholm has returned with his bride.from Wellington. The Taranaki Education Board proposes to apply to Government for a sum of money to erect a wing to the High School, for the purpose of establishing a Girls’High School. At Invercargill, Mr Hirst is petitioning against the election of Mr Daniel for Wallace. Forty-six horses have been entered for the Sydney Cup, to be run for in Easter week.
